The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is proposing a project on Diversified Agriculture for Enhanced Farm Income in the State of Himachal Pradesh in collaboration with the Directorate of Agriculture (DoA), Government of Himachal Pradesh (GoHP).
For this ADI was involved in carrying out and providing expert inputs to enhance income through diversified agriculture, other allied activities, infrastructure development and other institutional issues. The survey was carried out on marketing/farm management and farm economy survey in all the districts of Himachal Pradesh and 5-other States.
The survey has central focus on the production and market dimensions of vegetable farming. It aims at the understanding of comparative production potential, production challenges and market opportunities along with market aspirations of different market functionaries. The Survey aims at clarification of current conditions of farm household economy, distributors (commission agents, wholesalers, retailers), and consumers in the relevant places of the State of Himachal Pradesh and relevant markets outside the State of Himachal Pradesh.
The successful cultivation of vegetables depends upon its efficient marketing ensuring thereby remunerative returns to the farming community. The nature of the market conduct and market performance greatly influence the economical viability of specific commercial crop enterprises like that of vegetables. It is therefore needed to have an in-depth assessment of different markets and operational functionaries so that the existing gaps and constraints can be identified for improved marketing. This is likely to help in the formulation of strategic policy and R&D interventions. It is also likely to point out towards the existing market opportunities available for vegetable farming.
The present study is likely to help government, state development departments, donor agencies, NGOs and other community based organizations for the reorientation of their visionary plans of brining economic prosperity to the poverty ridden hill pockets through commercial cultivation of vegetables.
