In republic of India, water harvesting is deeply rooted in its social fabric. Despite our rich traditional wisdom, natural regeneration has come up as a critical factor for the development planning and action. Exploitation of ground water has increased manifold. Despite heavy investments natural resource management is largely exploitative rather than conservationist. Indigenous practices have been neglected.
Since last One & half decade, emphasis on area development approach has assumed a great importance, both Government and Private Companies has taken steps in initiating watershed approach in regenerating natural resources and recharging ground water through conservation and optimum use systems.
The need is more of a watershed development as a frame work of integrated, viable and decentralized pattern of development of degraded area where water is a scarce and mismanaged resource, and where exploitation of resources have resulted in overall degradation.
ADI while partnering with Government, donors and corporate houses has planned to evolve appropriate long-term programmatic thrust for facilitating integrated development on the lines of watershed to reverse the degradation process. ADI is evolving regional and State level strategies all over India for various States, donors and corporate houses, covering technical, financial and institutional issues for future implementation.
Given the diversity and complexity of these interventions, coupled with the fact that the these interventions need to achieve the set objectives of environmental regeneration through introduction of cost-effective, indigenous systems, and various other factors involving sustainability of such interventions. ADI feels the need for natural and institutional resource appraisal so as to plan local-specific intervention. The integrated water resource management strategy is based on land topography, recharging potential, ecological conditions, and other need based innovation. ADI aims to provide inputs to replenish environment and water and to achieve positive water balance.
